Weather Wining

"The weather is like the government, always in the wrong." -Jerome K. Jerome

It seems to me that everyone is always complaining about the weather. In the winter, "it's too cold" and "there's too much snow". In the summer, "it's too hot" and "it's too humid". During the winter people are crying out that they miss summer and when summer comes around, suddenly they miss winter. Few seem to appreciate it while the weather they've wanted is around.

I live in a place where the weather ranges from forty below to forty above. Our winters are cold and our summers are hot. It's the same every year and I must say it really is to be expected at this point.

The way I see it, there's always something to be done about the way we handle the weather. When things get cold, I merely dress warmly with multiple layers and begin looking forward to skating, playing in the snow, or curling up to watch Netflix with a warm blanket and a hot mug of cocoa. When it is warm, I look forward to time spent at the beach soaking up some sun or reading under a shady tree.

While in Peru last year, Peruvians demonstrated just how little the weather should be permitted to affect our mood or limit our activities.

When I arrived, the area had been subjected to not one, but two severe floods. Most would have thought activities to be cancelled but they would have been wrong. Hiking trails five feet under? We took the canoes. Walkways for the cabins flooded? Some spaced out logs with two-by-fours laid out over them like a pirate plank was both an easy and humorous remedy to the problem, especially with fish swimming over the walkway below.

Locals had their homes flooded, despite already being up on stilts and you would never know it from their faces. They simply took it in stride and smiled on. The school was flooded and yet they still found a use for it by housing some manatees that were soon to be tagged and released into the wild for tracking and studying.

Now, if the Peruvians I encountered could stay fun and cheerful despite the extreme humidity and the annual flooding, without complaint no less, what right would I have of complaining about a few feet of snow that can be shoveled out of the way?

Sure, after months of winter I begin to miss being able to lay back and read in the warm sun, but that doesn't mean I'm going to start complaining about winter or stop enjoying it however I can.

I could have complained about walking to work in the rain yesterday, but it was much more enjoyable to throw on my raincoat and rubber boots and simply enjoy the serenity and fresh smell the rain brought with it.

A few weeks ago, I could have complained about walking to work in the snow storm. Instead, I threw on multiple warm layers of warm clothing and marveled at the sight of the winter wonderland.

The weather may get really hot or really cold, but unlike other places around the globe, the weather is not destroying the home I live in so as far as I'm concerned, it's all good.

What's your favourite weather? What positives can you find in weather you often hear others complaining about?

Let me know by email or in the comments below!

Cheers!
