Birthdays and Spring Cleaning

Hello Bros and Bras,

Can you believe this blogger has been rambling on for over a year? Going through old posts, I noticed that it was The Bra Street Ramblers first birthday on March 5th. In the past year, TBSR has posted 50 articles and reached over 3,500 readers in thirty-six countries.

That being said, I want to extend a big sincere Thank You  to all of you. Thank you so very much for keeping me motivated in my written musings.

Now, on to today's feature!

“Spring cleaning isn’t just about sorting through things, and getting rid of clutter. It’s about taking stock of who you are, and how others see you. It’s a chance to redefine yourself, to change expectations, and to remember that it’s never too late to recapture who you were, or to aim for who you want to be.”

As you may have noticed from the milder weather, and in the case of fellow Canadians; air that doesn't hurt our faces, spring is finally here! (I am choosing to ignore that it was snowing two days ago... haha)

With spring, comes annual spring cleaning. Some dread it, some take pleasure in it, and some ignore it. To each their own, I say. Personally, I find a certain satisfaction in it. I love turning up my music, opening the windows to welcome the fresh air, and getting everything looking just the way I want it again.

Suddenly, things become easier to find, the rooms are brighter (thanks to some thorough cleaning of the dusty light fixtures) and there's an overall good energy flowing freely through the house.

However, spring cleaning is so much more than just cleaning your room, apartment, or house. It's like waking up your entire environment with a freshly brewed cup of coffee, only with soap and water instead. (For those of you who know me, yes, I understand the irony of that statement coming from someone who does not drink coffee.)

Now, a lot of my friends are new to living on their own, and may therefore be unsure of how to go about spring cleaning, about where to start. With them in mind, I have included a very brief guideline to be followed in full, partially, or altogether ignored. Again, to each their own, we all do things differently, this is just what works for me.

Spring Cleaning at Home

  • Pick your playlist, music makes everything more enjoyable and a broom can make a great dance partner.
  • Create your easy to carry cleaning basket; rags are a must.
  • Open windows. This will allow you to let some fresh air in as well as prevent a headache from any of the cleaners you may be using.
  • Start in one corner and fan out, one room at a time to avoid distraction and missed spots, and work from up to down. Gravity is very friendly with dust and debris that you have just wiped off from the fans and shelves.
  • Leave no stone, or drawer, unturned. Organize everything.
  • When dusting, move everything and don't forget the light fixtures and fans. It really will make all the difference.
  • Keep sweeping and vacuuming for last as all of the dust and debris will end up on the floor and you will have to redo it.
  • Once cleaned, feel free to redecorate however you see fit. Sometimes this means choosing a new accent colour for throw pillows, sometimes it means putting up new photos. Doesn't really matter what you do, as long as you Make it You.

Work Space

If you have a desk, the same can be done to give you a fresh feeling at work, simply remember to clean and organize every nook and cranny, throw up some new personalized decorations, and enjoy the results.

Routine

Remember that new years resolution you made but didn't stick with? The one to create a better routine for yourself, a healthier one? The one you ignored because, let's face it, hibernation mode is definitely a thing. Now's your second chance to revisit them, should you choose.

Facebook Contacts

Everyone I talk to seems to think that social media is filled with drama, so why not do a little contact weeding before you get to weeding your garden? Surround yourself with people that will make you feel alive like Spring rather than bringing you a brought down feeling of being snowed in with your least favourite cousin.

Yourself

After all the work you just went through to get all of your surroundings feeling fresh and new, don't forget to treat yourself with your own fresh pick me up. Perhaps that means a spa treatment and a new haircut, or maybe it means getting out to the garage to start polishing up that bike or jeep. It could even mean getting out there and going for a nice hike to enjoy the newly arrived season.

Regardless of what you choose to do, spring is in the air so now is the time to enjoy it and make the most of it!

Cheers!
