Week Six: Getting to Know Yourself as a Writer!
Greetings writers, congratulations on making it this far into your challenges! If you're like me and going through isolation at home, hopefully you are able to take advantage of this time and these challenges to get something amazing out of your head and onto paper. Now, if you're new and struggling a little as you learn the ropes, or even if you're experienced and wondering why the flow might be lacking, one of the most important things that I recommend as a writer, one of the greatest pieces in your tool kits, is learning about yourself in all of your glory as a writer.
Shouldn't writing be about getting to know your story or your characters? Absolutely! But more often than not, we force ourselves on these aspects and neglect the person the words are flowing through. So, what do I mean about getting to know ourselves? I'm sure I've touched on this in previous posts, and I'd love to supply you with those post links but after so many of them, I find I can't quite remember which ones those little gems are sewn into. I'm only human after all! So that being said let's hop into some good ol' point form, shall we?
Things to ask yourself as a writer:

Shouldn't writing be about getting to know your story or your characters? Absolutely! But more often than not, we force ourselves on these aspects and neglect the person the words are flowing through. So, what do I mean about getting to know ourselves? I'm sure I've touched on this in previous posts, and I'd love to supply you with those post links but after so many of them, I find I can't quite remember which ones those little gems are sewn into. I'm only human after all! So that being said let's hop into some good ol' point form, shall we?
Things to ask yourself as a writer:
- Am I a planner, or do I go with the flow?
- Am I a social or solo writer?
- Do I need busy bustle around me, do I prefer music, or do I require silence to write?
- Am I a morning bird, or a night owl?
- Do I fair better with longhand in a journal, or do I require keystrokes to keep up with my mind?
Knowing the answers to these questions will help you ensure that when you sit down to write, you're in your zone rather than forcing it. What your zone consists of, only you can decide as everyone is different in this facet. I myself find that I usually write better in the early morning or late evening, when the world around me is calm and peaceful. I rarely have any music playing (making exception only for instrumental or nature music), and I can't get any work done surrounded by people. I've tried these things, and they simply don't work for me as I am far too easily distracted. However, I have a friend that seems to work much better when she is writing with other people, or in a busy coffee shop.
Personally, I suggest trying variations when answering these questions. I once thought I was strictly an evening writer but have discovered that if I can drag my bum out of bed early enough, the words flow much easier while the sun is rising. So there's your challenge for the coming week! Try out a few different things and see where and how you get into the writing groove. Maybe you'll find it's easier for you to write in the morning with a quiet cup of coffee, or perhaps you write better with the household alive around you and some music going. The only way to know, is to give everything a shot!
Good luck!

Ten Weeks of Challenges
Week Six: Eliminate One Thing!
Welcome back everyone! Last time we did a Week Six challenge, we focused on adding more gratitude to out lives See Here. This time however, our focus is going to be on removing something from our lives.
That's right, out with the old to make room for better selves, things, and habits! This can be anything, whatever you think will make a difference in your life or the lives of others. Perhaps this means giving up the habit of purchasing disposable water bottles to make a difference for the planet. Maybe it means working to rid yourself of a mental process or highly used phrase that is self-deprecating. It might mean giving up a bad habit, or quitting smoking for your health. It can even mean de-cluttering your office and getting rid of all of the unnecessary documents you've held on to for far too long.
What you get rid of is up to you! Just make sure it means something to you, getting rid of a pencil on your desk for the sake of getting rid of something doesn't count!
Good luck!
