Ten Weeks of Writer's Prep and Challenges: Week Eight

Welcome back to Ten Week's of challenges! If you don't fancy yourself a writer and have no interest in beginning, scroll on down for your challenge.

Ten Weeks of Writer's Prep
Week Eight: Social Media Death Traps!

Our last Week Eight centered around Minions (See Here), little helpers of evil that contribute to slowing down the protagonist. This time around, let's discuss the little real life minions that sometimes contribute to slowing you down as a writer. Yes, that's right, I'm referring to various social media platforms. That might mean Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Twitter, or any one of the many others available to us today. I myself often fall victim to the many rabbit holes of Facebook.

Now to be clear, I'm not saying these platforms are bad, in fact facing this years global pandemic I do believe these things are keeping us all sane and am grateful they allow us to remain connected in so many ways. However, when it comes to sitting down and writing they might as well be squirrels getting this dog looking everywhere but her word processor. Next thing I know, it's been hours and I haven't truly gotten any writing done. Oops!

So this weeks challenge is not to try to give up social media, though I invite you to if you think that's something you wish to try, but rather to be mindful of it's affect on you and it's ability to distract you from the task at hand. Perhaps it simply means logging out of Facebook for an hour so that you don't receive notifications or get tempted, perhaps you have better self control than me and can simply tell yourself you won't open it in your browser, or maybe for you it will mean having a sticky note reminder on your monitor prompting you to focus. Ultimately, how you go about it is your call but hopefully a little mindfulness will go a long way in your word counts.

Good luck!

Ten Weeks of Challenges
Week Eight: Environmental Routine!

Last Week Eight of challenges, we focused on making environmental changes (See Here) and it should come as no surprise that today will have a similar theme. Especially being that while I type up this post it is Earth Day. Last week I challenged you to creating a healthier routine for yourself, this week I challenge you to come up with a healthier routine for your impact on the environment.

For me, this has meant composting more, regrowing produce in my kitchen using scraps from my groceries, and looking into vermiculture. Perhaps for you this will mean making a plan to shop smarter when it comes to purchasing plastic free groceries (granted right now there are some challenges with this as a lot of us are doing are groceries online and reusable bags aren't an option), perhaps it will mean investing in some reusable alternatives for previously disposable products such as straws, ear swabs, toothbrushes, makeup wipes. diapers, etc. Maybe once social distancing has been lifted, you will decide to start planning weekly grocery trips with a friend or neighbour so that you can carpool together. As always, the sky is the limit so this week have fun looking up new routines you wish to implement for yourself be they now or when they're more feasible.

Good luck and Happy Earth Day!
