Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2016 Bros and Bras! I hope it is treating you all very well so far.

It is a custom among many to come up with New Year’s Resolutions at the beginning of each year. For some, these resolutions are easy to follow through on, for others; they are a bit of a struggle. More often than not, these resolutions seem to involve hobbies, health, and anything else related to self improvement. I think these are excellent goals provided you know what works best for your personal follow through.

A lot of blogs will try to tell you the ‘right’ way of going about making resolutions to ensure success, or which resolutions you should commit yourself to. I myself believe that it really does depend on the individual.

Some people benefit from having goals of eating healthier and getting fit, others have already committed to these or are otherwise already happy with where they find themselves in that respect. Some people benefit from committing to being nicer, or trying to be more social, others are already social butterflies who sport a smile wherever they go or are simply quite content to lead more introverted lives. I believe if you’re going to set a New Year’s Resolution, it shouldn’t have anything to do with what other people are doing with theirs and everything to do with what you want to be able to do with your own life. After all, that’s exactly what this is about, your life.

The same can be said about how you go about accomplishing your resolution.

My best friend is capable of setting a goal and committing himself to accomplishing it with impressive resolve. I myself am more of a free spirit; I don’t do well with being told what to do even when it’s myself doing the telling. I like to feel things out and go from there.

For example, I intended to wake up early this morning to do yoga before work. My cat however, decided to spend the night loudly announcing to the world around her that she was in heat, so I ended up sleeping a couple hours longer and trading in yoga for writing.

You see, what works best for me as an individual is having many little goals that I can interchange depending on the mood I am in that day. Slowly, I make them all little habits that I turn to on down time. Working part time, this also benefits me as it can often be difficult to set a schedule in my personal life that might easily be undone when I am called in to work, asked to stay late, or asked to work a morning following a night shift.

For some, this might not work because the individual will tend to favour certain goals above others only to ignore the less favoured ones completely. These individuals are better off setting one goal at the beginning of the year that they will enjoy committing themselves to. I myself am very easily bored so it benefits me to go back and forth from one goal to another like a squirrel with ADD. In the end, I am still getting each of these goals accomplished a lot more frequently than I would have had I tried to commit to just one, grown bored with it, and given up on it.

We all have different things we need more of in our life and different things we could improve on just as we all have different ways of going about things. I don’t think there is a right or a wrong way of setting a goal in general, I believe it is merely a case of knowing yourself well enough to know what will work best for you on a personal level.

Just as a personal trainer will tailor a program to the individual he/she is working with to better target the desired areas, it is important to tailor our own goals to what best works for us and what we are looking to accomplish.

What type of resolutions are you looking to set for yourselves this year? Are you a full steam ahead goal setter or more of a where the wind takes me goal setter like myself? Feel free to post in the comments below. As always, those without Gmail accounts can email in comments to thebrastreetrambler@gmail.com along with a username so that I can post on your behalf.

I wish you all the best this coming year and hope you all find success in whatever endeavors you choose to pursue.

Cheers!

P.S. I do apologize for my unexplained absence over the past few weeks. There was a loss in the family and I simply wasn’t able to bring myself to put word to word processor. I do thank you all for your patience and understanding as well as your loyalty. I can’t believe how many of you have stuck around week after week and am truly grateful for your ongoing encouragement. Wishing you all the best in the year to come, cheers!
