Ten Weeks of Writers Prep
Week Nine: Research!

We're coming up on the final stretch, and if you've been following the writing challenges every week, you're more ready than you know

This week's challenge? Give yourself one week to do some extra research. Any related research. Allow the few extra details you discover to inspire you to take your creation further. Gather information you hadn't considered before, or information that will give your story more depth, give it more reality. After all, the devil is in the details. Keep a notepad nearby and write down any questions that may come to mind regarding your story, or any facts you may want to look up and include to make your story more authentic or accurate. Then, follow through using reliable sources and cross-reference your findings.

Don’t get caught in a cycle though, too often we keep going with research and never actually allow ourselves to feel ready. After this week, write down your questions in a notebook and come back to them during the editing process. You can always add and change things later, but you can't edit something that hasn't been started, let alone written.

Good luck, have fun!

Ten Weeks of Challenges
Week Nine: Do What You love!

Do you know why the world sucks? Well, one of the reasons. I know, this is a much more negative opening than my reader's are use to from me, but hear me out.

We have become so consumed by getting from point A, to point B, by making the fastest trips, by finding the most efficient way, by focusing on the end game, by focusing on the numbers, the funding, the cheques, by putting in the work, by getting things done.... that we've completely lost sight of the journey.

We've started living to work, when we should be working to live.

And who can blame us? The cost of living these days is outrageous! It use to be, an individual could support his entire family by putting in forty hours a week. Now, two people working forty hours a week hardly puts bread on the table.

But, in allowing ourselves to be consumed by the stress of it all, we're no longer individuals. We're workers. We'll schedule every hour from start to finish at work, but when it comes to the things we love, we toss them on the back burner. It is time to be reminded that scheduling time for ourselves is just as important as scheduling that conference call with Tokyo.

This week, your challenge is simply to do something you love. Find the time, schedule it for yourself, non-negotiable. Think of a hobby you use to love, or think of one you've always wished you could start. Even if it's just one hour after the kids have gone to sleep, or one hour asking your partner to take care of things while you focus on your you (offer up an hour for them to focus on them as well), you will notice the difference in yourself. Finding our individual selves again, focusing on the things we love, has a way of recharging us and allowing us to take a breath and smile again. You'll even find you have more energy at work, if you take time away from work mode. Crazy, I know, but give it a shot!

Good luck!
