Ten Weeks of Writers Prep
Week Five: Conflicts!
This week, you get to add a little more
substance to your plot. What are five conflicts you can add to your
plot line for your primary character prior to the climax? Are there
any you can think of for your antagonist?
Remember, a story needs more than just
one thing to go wrong. It’s the subtle conflicts that often
contribute the most to the development of your characters. It shows
us who they are, what their strengths are, and of course let us not
forget, it allows us to see that they are not perfect. Conflicts make
characters more relatable and allow a reader to empathize. It is by
demonstrating the depth of your characters that you will have readers
enthralled with them. Everyone loves an underdog, and a true
masterpiece evokes emotion, so don’t go easy on them.
Again, it is important to remember that
your antagonist is a character too, not a lamp. They need the same
emotion and depth to make them as real as the protagonist. Think
about your favourite villains, what makes them special? How was it
demonstrated through conflict?
So, that's your challenge for this
week, have fun stirring up trouble!

Weeks of Challenges
Week
Five: Good Support!
This week, your
challenge is to dedicate time, money, or effort to supporting a good
cause. Now, you may not have all three of those resources, but that's
okay. Whatever you can do, now is the time to do it.
What does this
mean? It means donating some funding to something you believe in, if
funding is something you can spare, and/or dedicating a few hours to
helping out. If you have neither time, nor money, there are other
ways in which a person can support a good cause. How about
advertising? I have learned in my life to never underestimate the
power of word of mouth, it can make or break those causes you choose
to support. How can you show your support through advertising? Well,
you can mention it to a friend, you can post about it on social media
-not just linking people to it, but explaining why this is something
you are choosing to support really makes a difference in whether
others will also decide to get on board,- or even reaching out to
that cause and asking them about the ways in which you can support
them. There are so many ways to bring to light the good causes all
around us and to encourage further support for them.
Now, what kind of
causes am I referring to? That I leave entirely to you. It can be a
local pet shelter, a soup kitchen, a homelessness support network, it
can be a cancer society, a fundraising event, it can even be a
friends start up business, or an artistic friends work. The
possibilities, as I always say, truly are endless.
So get out there
and use what you can do spread the wealth of good your community can
do! Good luck!
