Ten Weeks of Writers Prep
Week Three: Antagonist!

This week, develop some of the more minute details of your antagonist. Here are a few questions to consider however, feel free to take this time to look up other prompts online. Remember that your antagonist is often just as important to your story as your protagonist, so it’s important to develop them as well. Here are some of the basic details but try to include as many details as you came up with last week for your protagonist.

Who is your Antagonist? What is their name and relation to your protagonist?

What do they look like? Do they look intimidating, or are they deceptively innocent in appearance? Are they young, or older? Does anything physical betray them as being an antagonist?

Where do they come from? What is their lineage? How does their background influence their beliefs and the way in which they comport themselves?

What do they do for a living?

What are they afraid of? Everyone is afraid of something, it usually motivates them in some way. They might fear a life of subordination, of not being able to prove themselves to someone, of losing someone or something they hold dear.

What are their strongest values/convictions? What makes them tick? An antagonist isn't just mean for the sake of being mean, they are still human... or the species that they are, and thus have something they live for, rules they live by.

What are their abilities and strengths? Remember, even antagonist have positive traits to them, sometimes it is physical strength, incredible intellect, a specific code of honour, etc

What are their weaknesses and flaws? Antagonists also need flaws and weaknesses. Not only does this make them the antagonist, but it is also important to remember what leaves them vulnerable to defeat.

Do they have Religious or Spiritual beliefs?

Do they have family? If so, how do they feel about their family? Do they love and protect them in their own way, or do they disdain them?

What is their goal? What drives them that leaves them in opposition with your protagonist? How do their goals differ, or do they have the same goals with different ideas of how those goals should be attained?

Why is your character the antagonist? Are they truly evil, or simply misunderstood? What has occurred in their life to result in them facing off against your protagonist? What has lead them to their current beliefs and goals?

Ten Weeks of Challenges
Week Three: Ego Boost!

This week, your challenge is to pick five friends- count them, five!- that you believe could benefit from an ego boost.

Perhaps you think they are absolutely amazing and awesome but you don't think they are as aware of it as they could be. Perhaps they are going through a really difficult time and it has knocked them down leaving them feeling less than spectacular. Or, perhaps they are cheerleaders to everyone else in their life and could use having the tables turned for once. Either way, pick them and let them know just how amazing you think they are. Let them know what you admire about them, or what you think makes them special and worth keeping around. Let them know if you envy any talents of theirs that you think are really cool.

Let them know of any compliments that may have been said behind their back. After all, it's a little wasted if they don't know about it, isn't it?

The world can be a very difficult, dark, and exhausting place, let's help make it better by lifting each other up!
