Ten Weeks of Writers Prep, and a Challenge: Week One!
Well Ramblers, this is it, week one of challenges!
If you've been playing with the idea of writing a book for years but have never quite gotten around to it, this is for you!
Never fancied yourself a writer? Scroll down below for your alternative challenge! Good luck!
Ten
Weeks of Writers Prep
Week
One: Setting!
Note all that comes to mind while
considering the following:
-What Genre of book will you be
writing?
Will you be writing science fiction?
Adventure? Fantasy? Urban Fantasy? Romance? Will it be a combination
of these? Why have you chosen this genre, what characteristics of
this genre will shine through the strongest?
-Where will your book take
place?
Describe some key locations. Why have
you chosen this location? What is the weather like there? How is it
decorated? What do buildings look like there? What is the geography
like there? What is the terrain like? What distance will your story span?
-When is it set?
What era? What time of year? Over what
length of time will your story span? Why have you chosen this time
period? What are the characteristics of this choice that will stand
out? Is this time frame inspired by history, reality, or fabrication?
Does it take place before or after any major events that might have
an impact on it (example: religious, political, war..)?
-Influencing Factors
What other elements are prevalent in
this location? Are there values that are unique to this location,
religions, spiritual beliefs? What are some common hobbies for
characters living there?
You have one week to figure out as much
as you can, have fun!
Ten
Weeks of Challenges
Week
One: Reaching out!
Too
often we run into friends we haven't seen in a while, we are excited
to see them but are on our way somewhere and are otherwise busy. We
quickly catch up, exchanging the cliff-notes of our lives, then we
part ways speaking the ever popular but rarely realized cliche: “We
should get together sometime!”
This
week, the challenge is simple. Reach out to one of those people and
actually make a plan to catch up. Compare schedules, and write
something down in your agendas or phones reminding yourselves of the
plan so you can follow through on it.
Now,
I said it was simple, I didn't say it would be easy. I have a couple
of friends whose schedules are always conflicting with mine, and
sometimes we have to make our dinner date plans a month in advance
but hey! At least then we know a month in advance that there are
plans coming up that we can't double book!
Give
it a try! You might find after this challenge that you make a habit
of planning more time with your friends.
