The Power of Music

“Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.”- Angela Monet

What is it about music that makes it so incredibly special? What is it about this particular form of art that touches us so very deeply, that reaches the very core of our emotions, allows us to accept them, and aids us in our healing?

Music is always there for us, well... most of the time. Let's face it, when we're going through a tough breakup, music tends to turn on us with unexpected betrayal. That being said, it is also capable of reminding us of some of the best times and people in our lives.

Here are some songs/artists I can't listen to without attributing them to someone or something;

Poets of the Fall
This is just one of the bands I can't listen to without thinking of a man I use to date.  Particularly their song Someone Special because I considered it to be our song and I associate it to how we first met.

I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack
Anytime I listen to this song, I remember my neighbour growing up because she was like a grandmother to me and this was the song she personally chose for her funeral, wanting everyone to hear the lyrics as though she herself were wishing their message upon us.

Jumpstart by These Kids Wear Crowns
This song causes me to automatically fall into the silly dance moves that I spent countless hours memorizing for a college flashmob. Some of my fellow mobbers now loathe the song after hours of repetition but I myself am quite fond of it still as it reminds me of all of the fun times I was able to share with them.

Eye of the Tiger
I'm pretty sure I will forevermore use my leg as an air guitar during this song thanks to one of the lead actors of Supernatural, Jensen Ackles.

Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw
This song holds significant meaning for me as my family associates it to my mothers journey through cancer and the way we chose to live our lives following that period in her life. Thanks to my mothers victory, her example and attitude, and this song, we all make a point to live life to the fullest as though we were dying, because it's only a matter of unknown time before we do.

Sometimes songs like these invoke tears, other times they remind us to smile and reminisce. However, that's just because music is a little like an external hard drive for our memories. We easily associate moments and feelings in life to specific songs either because the lyrics remind us of something we can relate to, or because we have memories that involve that song having been played. Music is great that way, for that reason and many more it's a pretty amazing thing to have access to.

Music distracts us when our minds are lingering on unwanted topics, and it motivates us when we are working out or cleaning. It keeps us awake on long drives, allows us to cry when we don't realize just how much we need to, gives us something to relate to when we feel alone, and helps us to fall asleep when our nights seem restless. It's applications are endless.

Not to mention, music has the power to bring a whole room of complete strangers together with just a few notes. Don't believe me? Start singing Don't Stop Believing among a crowd and I can almost guarantee others will join in. I remember being on a city bus in the middle of the night with a few friends, it only took me one line of the song to get the entire accordion bus full of people to join in. I must say it was pretty epic.

Also worthy of noting, music is a great way to identify others with similar interests. If I start singing Eye of the Tiger, I'll quickly be able to tell who is a Rocky fan, who is a Supernatural fan like me, and who seriously needs to do their homework when it comes to great music.

Now, I don't know about you but I find music to be a great source of exercise and stress relief as well. I'm not talking about the Barry Manilo or Marvin Gaye applications either (though, on that note, we can't forget music's application for setting a mood), I'm referring to a good night out dancing with the girls. Talk about a workout, especially if you're dancing in heels!

From remedying boredom, to storing memories, from motivation to stress relief, I turn to music for so very much in my life. What is the single most influential song in your life? Any particular songs have significant meaning for you? Share in the comment below.

Cheers!
