Taking Control of Limitations
Sometimes in life, we are dealt certain cards that are less than favourable. Difficulties and challenges that can either take control of our lives or be controlled.
These cards can be allowed to define and rule our lives, or they can be accepted as limitations to be worked around. It is one thing to say “I cannot climb.” but quite another to say “I cannot climb that high, but I can climb to a certain height.”
Sometimes our minds will try to trick us, try to tell us that because of our situation we cannot do something when in fact, we simply need to put forth more effort to conquer our doubts and stop psyching ourselves out.
Being the social person I am, I have had many opportunities to meet some truly amazing and courageous people. Some of those people have faced things from powerful phobias to unimaginably painful conditions. Where most would simply give up and accept these circumstances as their lives, these individuals have decided to simply work around them. In most cases, you wouldn't even know it to look at them.
That's often the case though isn't it? You never really know what a person is facing, especially not by looking at them.
As has often been the case in my previous posts, I'd like to take a moment to share a quote by my favourite author. In fact, it is from my favourite of her books.
“It's easy to look at people and make quick judgments about them, their present and their past, but you'd be amazed at the pain and tears a single smile hides. What a person shows the world is only one tiny facet of the iceberg hidden from sight. And more often then not, it's lined with cracks and scars that go all the way to the foundation of their soul.” - Sherrilyn Kenyon, Acheron
Another relevant point of interest is a video I came across that illustrates this point with so much strength and courage; Message from the Fat Pig
I find this video, and those in my life I have come to know going through similar situations, either physically or mentally, truly inspiring. When faced with my own challenges, these people, their strength and their outlooks, remind me that I can find ways of conquering my obstacles.
“Over, under, around, or through, there's always a way. You don't give up and you never give in. They can scar your body and take your freedom, but only you can surrender your heart and soul. Nothing is worth compromising yourself for. Stand fast and stand true. Always.” - Sherrilyn Kenyon, Illusion

Whatever your trial, whatever your story, remember, you've made it this far and whether you know it or not, you are someone's inspiration.
Cheers!

You make some good points, that most people forget.
ReplyDeleteIt seems so easy to quickly judge others rather than take the time to truly understand them. Most people are are just doing their best with what they have and what they know. We might question why they do thing the way they do or why their priorities are the way they are, but if we truly knew them, then it might start to make more sense and they might just be doing things the way that works best for them.
I can think of a few times in my life, where someone wanted to help me, but insisted on helping me their way and not the way I asked. They wanted to help me in a way that would work for them, rather than a way that would work for me.
People have their reasons for doing things the way they do. They know themselves better than anyone and you have to trust a bit that they know what is easiest for them. You can offer them different options and make suggestions, if you feel they are misinformed, but in the end they know what works best for them.
You might look at someone who appears to be doing nothing with their life and wonder why they have no ambition or drive. Why don't they just do this or that? Why don't they just help themselves? The simple answer might be that they are carrying around such a great burden with them that just getting by, day-to-day, is all they are able to manage. You can't see their inner struggles. You don't know their past. You don't know what obstacles stand in their way. They could be doing their very best just to keep pushing forward and they shouldn't be judged for not meeting up to someone else's standards. The fact that they are still here, alive and kicking, is a victory and the battle is not over. Everyone deserves a chance to show what they can be and what they have to offer the world, when they are at their best.
Well said, David. I completely agree; everyone has an unheard story that explains their actions and behaviours, and these tales require exploration rather than ill sought conclusions. Thank you for sharing!
