My Heart's In Neverland
If you have children or have the opportunity to have them around you in your life, chances are you've watched them in amazement as they've found joy and thrills in things as simple as cardboard boxes or a few jingly keys. Some of you have maybe even envied them that carefree wonder that is often lost to us as the years progress. Some of you however, may be more like my friends and I who simply refuse to shed that sense of fun and joy found in the simple and childish things.
"I wish I was that young again." We often hear this said in envy of the things we used to do as children, but why? I say, any age is the perfect age for the things we could be doing. Yes, I may not be as resilient as I use to be, I may not have the same never ending stamina children seem to have, but I am at an age where I feel I can enjoy the best of both worlds. I'm old enough to enjoy a night out dancing with my friends, and carefree enough to realize that the only thing stopping me at any given moment from finger painting or building snowmen, is myself.Last summer, I wrote a post called Oh Would You Just Grow Down Already!? and it is with great childish pride that I tell you all that this past weekend was a prime example of my Neverland dwelling, never-going-to-grow-up, child at heart.
This weekend past, a couple of my friends from college came to visit for the weekend and during this time I'd have to say the only adult thing we really did was go see Deadpool (Absolutely amazing in all of it's awesome vulgarity!). The rest of the weekend we spent skating, dressing up, and watching Disney movies while pigging out on junk food in what can only be described as a most epic blanket fort. That's right, a blanket fort. Why? Because why not!?
Judge me all you like but think back to your childhood and tell me that you don't miss having that kind of innocent fun. That creating your own little clubhouse didn't leave you feeling legen...wait for it... dary.
There, amongst our pillows, sleeping bags, comforters, and yes even some stuffed animals, the stresses of being an adult no longer plagued any of us. Beyond our colourful sheets and blankets, the world ceased to exist.
Alright, so the blanket fort didn't actually change the fact that we were adults, but that just meant we were tall enough and intelligent enough to erect a fort large enough to accommodate a couch, snack table and large screen TV! Like I said, best of both worlds.
More and more, society is coming to the realization that there has to be balance in our lives. Not taking a break to be silly and enjoy the simple things in life is only making us sick. Stress is a real thing capable of real damage. Some people put together puzzles, some people have started turning to adult colouring books (Thanks for the gift Mum!), and some people have started buying onesie pajamas (Thanks for the gift Lil Sis!). Why? Because there is amazing stress-relief to be found in the ways of Peter Pan, in the ways we find of grasping our childhood imagination and learning to enjoy imaginative fun again. Most of you have probably seen Hook with Robin Williams, this movie is a prime example of the point I am trying to make.
So think back, remember the kind of fun you used to have as a child. What's stopping you from doing that now? What's stopping you from playing with legos and play doh, from colouring and crafting, from testing out toys in the children's section of the mall or building the most awesome blanket fort your can think up?
Only you are stopping yourself, so get out of your way and have fun!
And hey, if you happen to build a blanket fort and it has a TV in it, here are a few movies to consider watching based on today's post.
Rambler Recommendations:
Deadpool (2016): Not yet out on DVD but trust me, this movie is not to be missed just as long as there are no real children present and you have no qualms with violence or vulgarity. I cannot actually remember a movie that has made me laugh more than this one. I may have to watch it five times just to catch all of the jokes that I missed the first time because I was laughing so much.
Pan (2015): This movie was recently released on DVD and is the prequel to the famous fairy tale Peter Pan. The graphics, plot, and soundtrack were all very well done and left me feeling like I had received a giant hug right to the childhood. A must see for all ages.
Hook (1991): If you haven't already seen this one, time to catch up! Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Julia Roberts and Maggie Smith all come together to remind us that we are never too old to be reunited with our child-at-heart. This is one of my personal favourite Robin Williams movies, he does a fantastic job playing Peter Pan all grown up... and afraid of heights....?
Well Bros and Bras, this child-at-heart Rambler currently has a cold and needs some rest, so until next week, stay young!
Cheers!
