3000 Views from... Dopplegangers?
I am incredibly excited to say that this week, and in under a year no less, The Bra Street Rambler reached 3000 views.
There are times when I struggle to find the time, or a topic, to write a post about. Regardless of the blank stares at the monitor, or the 1 am typing sessions, those page views remind me that it's worth it. As long as there is even just one person still reading, I will keep trying to type out any funny story, perspective, or life lesson that I can get my brain and keyboard fingers communicating.
If there are ever any suggestions or query's you Ramblers would like addressed, I certainly hope you will not hesitate to share. Not only would it mean a few less hairs pulled in writer's block frustration, but it would also allow me to have a better understanding of those wonderful people out there reading. I'm not ashamed to say I'm certainly curious to know more about all of you with my stats saying things like 3000 views across 35 countries! Heck, feel free even to just comment or email saying how you stumbled upon this Bra's Ramblings or what other kind of blogs you find yourself reading! Help me as a blogger give you as a reader more of what you want, I aim to please.
Wrapping up my miniature celebration, thank you to each and every one of you out there taking time out of your schedules to see what I'm rambling about every week. You're support is amazing and very much appreciated. I truly do wish you and yours all the best!
On to this weeks post!
They say that everyone has a look-a-like, or "doppleganger", someone in the world who looks so much like you, you could easily be mistaken for each other. Some even live in the same town. Sometimes we are aware of the existence of our dopplegangers, sometimes we are not. I happen to know of at least three, one even shares my first name!
Over the years, I'd been told a couple times by friends that they had seen someone who looked just like me walking around downtown. I have to admit, I only truly started taking this possibility seriously four years ago when I moved away to college. My perspective on look-a-likes was changed after what felt like a ten minute debate on my employment with a student in my section (this was while I was working as a resident advisor).
This student accused me of having not waved back when they had seen me the day before. Naturally, I asked if it was possible I had not seen them, to which they replied that I had looked right at them. Okay, a little strange especially considering how fond I was of each and every one of my students both years of being and RA. Curious to figure out what had happened, I asked my student where this had occurred and was informed that it was at Starbucks (coffee shop) while I was working.
Now, the problem with this was that I had not, nor had I ever been, employed at Starbucks. Or at any other coffee shop for that matter. In fact, I hate coffee, I even dislike the smell of it. Something this student of mine was convinced could not possibly be true because they had seen me clear as day with their own two eyes.
Normally, I might dismiss it but after finally convincing my student that I wasn't trying to trick them, that it was not me they had seen, I had to consider how much this person must have resembled me in order to have this student so convinced despite seeing me on a daily basis and knowing me quite well.
Flash forward to moving back home from college and having my second case of mistaken identity. Here I am, working one day at the library when an older woman walks up and addresses me by name. A woman I had never met, and had no way of recognizing. Confused, I asked how I knew her and she stated that she had been my teacher in high school. Problem there being that I had never attended the school she was referring to. I had never attended any English high school, I had spent my entire high school education at a French school a half hour drive away. Thankfully, my coworker was able to clear the matter up by saying she was friends with a girl of the same name who had gone to the school in question and that there was indeed an uncanny resemblance.
Of course, when shown a picture I didn't think we looked all that much alike but I could understand how, at a certain angle, the mistake might be made.
Finally, what I think is the best case of mistaken identity for me, something a friend has referred to as a real life case of a Harrison Ford movie, my day yesterday.
So I was walking to work, minding my own business when a cop car pulls up in the lane opposite the sidewalk I was on. At the time, I thought nothing of it, if anything I figured the police officer had spotted the guy walking in front of me who was smoking a joint, so I just kept walking. The guy in front of me turns around and walks towards some friends he had spotted, the cop car stays parked in the street, window rolled down, looking in my direction. Again, I think nothing of it and I keep walking.
As I was making my way towards the other side of the building, I saw my coworkers car, waved, and altered my direction slightly to go greet her with my umbrella as it was raining and I didn't want her to get wet. The cop car was then joined by two more cruisers, as though trying to block off the street around the area my friend and I were in. I had done nothing wrong so again, I figured they were doing their job and it was best I mind my own business and not get involved. That being said, I greeted my friend and we walked in to work together.
As it turns out, they had in fact been there because of me and were just about to come and get me, (Here's where I imagine them throwing me to the ground and questioning me aggressively -thanks for that Hollywood haha) when they had noticed me approach my coworker whom they knew and figured would never associate with a convicted felon, and decided instead to confirm my identity with the person who had just dropped her off and happened to be an off duty police officer.
The description they had been given for an individual who thankfully, did not share my name, matched me to a perfect tee! Looks like one of my dopplegangers had been pretty busy.
Thank goodness for knowing the right people and having them around at the right time!
