Challenge Yourself

If you’re the creative type who bores easily, you probably already understand the importance of challenging yourself. You’ll understand the need for trying new things in order to escape the lull.

When I’m not finding some new way of challenging myself, I fall into a lull and develop boring habits such as Netflix binging day after day. Knowing this, I’m always finding some new thing to focus on from learning to rock climb to learning to pick a lock, from studying mythology to studying psychology, from figuring out a new art/craft technique to writing a blog, and the list goes on, and on, and on.

Now I have my eyes set on a new challenge and if any of my Bros and Bras fancy themselves writers, it is a challenge I forward on to you.

NaNoWriMo.

For those of you who have never heard of this, it is National Novel Writers Month. A challenge issued to writers with a goal of completing a 50,000+ word novel in 30 days. This challenge takes place in November, with September and October being months of preparation to develop ideas, characters, and plots.

Formerly known as the Office of Letters and Light, the NaNoWrimo organization is non-profit and has a website riddled with support, encouragement, suggestions, and mentors.

They have everything from advice on how to get started, to forums for research and advice. Members of the NaNoWrimo community also go so far as to organize their own writing parties in various cities.

That being said, there are also extensions of NaNoWriMo meant for those who would seek the same help and encouragement year round. This includes Camp NaNoWriMo, a virtual writers retreat, as well as The Come Write In program geared to providing resources to create writers havens in your neighbourhood.

If any of this is touching on your interest, I highly recommend checking out their website at www.nanowrimo.org

That being said, I beg your forgiveness Bros and Bras for any absence or delays you may notice in the months to come. I foresee myself being quite consumed and distracted by this challenge as my characters have already begun taking over my mind during every waking moment.

As always, if you have any suggestions for topics you would like to see addressed on The Bra Street Rambler, I invite you to share them via comment or email. Come November, I’m certain your help in thinking of anything unrelated to NaNoWriMo will be greatly appreciated.

Had experience participating in NaNoWrimo? Think you might sign up? Comment below and let me know!

Cheers!
