Make It You!
Take a look around you, what do you see? Are you in your bedroom, your home, your workspace? If so, how does your space reflect you? What about the room says this is your space?
If you follow my blog, you'll know that my roommate has recently moved out and I have claimed the far larger room as my own. Naturally, the first thing I did was figure out what I wanted; where and how I wanted to decorate. Suffice to say, my book cases went up first (I have over six hundred books)!
My book shelves make me happy, they are one of the most personal things I can have in my space. They contain all of my books and they house the nic nacs that give my room a dose of my own individual personality. If someone who knew me were to walk around my apartment, they would know without a doubt exactly which room was mine even without looking at all of the picture frames on the wall.
Speaking of picture frames; photos, a perfectly easy means of personalizing any space.
everyone is a traveler, but there are so very many other things you can put up in frames. There is of course the obvious family photos, but there are also the pictures you are tagged in with friends online that can be printed and framed, photos of school trips in high school, photos of you and your best friend, team photos, etc. If you're an artist, you can draw little caricatures of yourself and your friends like I had my old roommate do up for our fridge. Like nature? What about framing some foliage? Musician? What about framing a decorated or signed guitar pick? Perhaps the pick you used for a memorable gig? Gamer? What about framing the game covers for your favourite games growing up? You can frame just about anything from favourite moments, to favourite things, to favourite quotes.
Whether it's a couple photos on your desk at work, a vase of your favourite flowers on the kitchen table, or the antique furniture you collect, I think it's important to make a conscious effort to imbue a space with your own individuality . Giving your personal space a dose of you makes it more enjoyable, it imbues it with your energy in a way that makes it less of a chore and disconnect for you to be there.
This doesn't just go for the layout of your space either, there are so many things I feel can be used to reflect who you are as a beautiful and unique individual. Your workspace if possible (even if that means just getting an awesomely you seat cover for your work truck), your living space, your bedroom, your closet, your accessories, your hair/contacts/tattoos and piercings if you have them (personally I don't have any as I like to express myself through my natural hair, eyes and skin), your creations if you are an artistic person, etc.
My little sister is in the military, so naturally her self expression as far as her attire is quite limited. However, being the awesome individual that she is, she found a way around this. Her toe nails are hidden. That's right, she found a small victory in expressing herself without breaking the rules. Every now and again, she would paint her toe nails in all kinds of random colours, sometimes even a different colour for each toe. Even though no one could see her art, she took joy and comfort in her self-expression knowing that she was still secretly doing and showing something that let her stand out from the rest of the crowd.
Another example is my best friend who comes from a very large family, I mean a very large family. She has 85 cousins! Removing them from the equation, she is one of three very creatively expressive sisters. So how does one go about standing out? By incorporating her love of history into her wardrobe and becoming a self-proclaimed pirate of course (historical rendition not Hollywood mind you)! Let me tell you, my best girl can rock the stripes and scarves like nobody's business!
My point is this, people are year round snowflakes, no two are exactly alike and we should be proud of this. Your personal space, your self that you show the world, should be used with pride to show people who you are and what you are made of.
